ಇಂದ್ರಬಾಬು ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ ‘ಸಂತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತ ಕಬೀರ' ಎರಡು ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ. ಮೊದಲನೆಯದು, ‘ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದು ಕಾಲವಲ್ಲ' ಎನ್ನುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಾರಿತ್ರಿಕ ಸಂತಕವಿಯ ಕುರಿತ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡಿರುವುದು. ಎರಡನೆಯದು, ಚರಿತ್ರೆ ಈ ಹೊತ್ತಿನ ವರ್ತಮಾನವೂ ಹೌದಲ್ಲವೇ ಎಂದು ಕಬೀರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಅನ್ನಿಸುವುದು - ರಘುನಾಥ ಚ.ಹ.

ಸಾಮರಸ್ಯ ಸಾರುವ ಸಂತ ಕಬೀರ - ವಿಜಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ

15ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಸಂತ, ಸುಧಾರಣಾವಾದಿಗಳಾದ ಕಬೀರರ ಬದುಕು, ಆದರ್ಶವನ್ನು ಹೇಳುವ 'ಸಂತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತ ಕಬೀರ' ಚಿತ್ರ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ತೆರೆಕಂಡ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಎಂದು ನಿಸ್ಸಂಶಯವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಇಂದ್ರಬಾಬು ನಿರ್ದೇಶನದ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಕಥಾವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾದರೂ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ನೋಡಲೇಬೇಕು. ಧರ್ಮದ ಕುರಿತು ಇಂಥದ್ದೊಂದು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ, 'ಏನನ್ನೂ ಕಟ್ಟದಿರಬೇಕಯ್ಯಾ ಕಬೀರ, ಏನನ್ನೂ ಕೆಡವದಿರು...' ಎಂಬ ಕಬೀರರ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಜನರಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಶಿವರಾಜ್ ಕುಮಾರ್‌ ಸೇರಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರ್ಮಾಪಕರನ್ನು ಪ್ರಶಂಸಿಸಲೇಬೇಕು. - ಪದ್ಮಾ ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ

14 ಮತ್ತು 15ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಕಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದ ಸಂತ ಕಬೀರ 21 ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ, ಅವನ ಪದಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ, ಅವನ ಪ್ರೇಮ ತತ್ವದ ಮೂಲಕ, ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಡಾಂಭಿಕತನದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಸಾರಿದ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ ಮಾರ್ಗಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತವಾಗಿ ಉಳಿದಿರುವುದು ಸೋಜಿಗವೇ! ಈ ಸೋಜಿಗ ಸಂತನ ಬದುಕು-ಅವನು ಬದುಕಿದ್ದ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಸಂದರ್ಭ ಹೇಗಿರಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದು ಹಲವು ಲೇಖಕರ, ರಂಗಕರ್ಮಿಗಳ, ಸಿನಿಕರ್ತೃಗಳ ಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸೆಗೆ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿರುವುದು ಸಹಜವೇ. ಇಂತಹುದರಲ್ಲಿ 'ತಮಸ್' ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ಹಿಂದಿ ಲೇಖಕ ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಸಾಹನಿ ಅವರ 'ಸಂತ್ಯಾಗ ನಿಂತ ಕಬೀರ' (ಕಬೀರ ಖಡಾ ಬಾಜಾರ್ ಮೆ) ಎಂಬ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ರಂಗಕೃತಿ, ಕಬೀರನ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆದಿರಬಹುದಾದ ವಿವಿಧ ಘಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದಿಡುವ ಸಶಕ್ತ ನಾಟಕ.

Today, people fed on religious bigotry would be shocked with this film. What?! Kabira, the 15th-century mystic poet and saint, made fun of the rituals followed by both Hindus and Muslims 600 years ago! Not some superstitious mumbo jumbo, but Kabir criticised some of the basic things that identify some Hindus and Muslims with their faith. This film, based on the classic Bhisham Sahni play, does not hesitate to point out many of these ideas of Kabir. Santheyalli Ninta Kabira could have been in trouble if it was not backed by the reality of history. It is a film that was very much needed in these times. This film is not for someone who wants entertainment akin to minute noodles. This is a film that you need to watch losing yourself in the visuals, appreciating the words that Kabira wrote that resonate and make sense even today. Ismail Darbar's music is a big highlight, for the Sufi touch stands out. Santheyalli... suffers from the lack of an anchor who can tell us the story coherently. The real story that Babu wants to tell is of the conflict between the values that Kabir has stood for versus the ones that the so-called caretakers of religion- Sikandar Lodi in Delhi, the maulvis and the pandits of Kashi etc.- have championed.
