ಇಂಪ್ರೆಸ್ಸಿವ್ ರಂಜನೆಯ 'ಚೌಕ' ಚಿತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ವಿಮರ್ಶಕರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಮಾರ್ಕ್ಸ್ ಎಷ್ಟು?

ಮೀರಲಾದ ‘ಚೌಕ’ದ ಹಂಗು- ಪ್ರಜಾವಾಣಿ

ಭೂಮಿಯ ಹಂಗು ತೊರೆದಂತೆ ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾರುವ ಗಾಳಿಪಟ, ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ಕಾಲ ಆಕಾಶದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಹರಿಸಿದರೂ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತದೆ. ‘ಚೌಕ' ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕೂಡ ಇದೇ ಮಾದರಿಯದು. ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳ ಸೂತ್ರಬದ್ಧ ಚೌಕಟ್ಟನ್ನು ಮೀರಲು ಹಂಬಲಿಸುವ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಹಳೆಯದೇ ಚೌಕಕ್ಕೆ ಮರಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂಥ ಹಂಬಲ ಕೂಡ ಅಪರೂಪವಾದುದರಿಂದ ‘ಚೌಕ' ಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ‘ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ' ಎನ್ನಬಹುದು.ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪ್ರಸಂಗಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ನಾಲ್ವರು ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಾಹಕರನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಗೀತ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದು ತಂತ್ರದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಗಮನಸೆಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಇದೊಂದು ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ಕಸರತ್ತಾಗಿಯಷ್ಟೇ ಪರಿಣಮಿಸಿದೆ. ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಪುನರ್‌ ರೂಪಿಸಲು ಮುತುವರ್ಜಿ ವಹಿಸಿರುವ ಚಿತ್ರತಂಡ, ಪ್ರಾದೇಶಿಕ ಸೊಗಡನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಳ್ಳುವಲ್ಲಿ ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ವಿಜಯಪುರದ ಗೋಲಗುಂಬಜ್ ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿದರೆ ಉಳಿದ ಊರುಗಳ ಚಹರೆಗಳು ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಢವಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಪಾತ್ರವರ್ಗದ ಪೈಕಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಗಮನಸೆಳೆಯುವುದು ‘ಚೌಕ'ದ ಕೇಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲುವ ಕಾಶಿನಾಥ್‌. ಕನ್ನಡದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು ಅವರನ್ನು ಪೋಷಕನಟನಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಸರ್ವಾಂತರ್ಯಾಮಿಯಂತೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುವ ಚಿಕ್ಕಣ್ಣನವರದು, ನಿರೂಪಣೆಯ ಅನುಕೂಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ರೂಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಬೆನ್ನುಮೂಳೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಪಾತ್ರ. ಹಾಡುಗಳು ‘ಚೌಕ' ಚಿತ್ರದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆ. ಅವು ಕಥೆಗೆ ಪೂರಕವಾಗಿಯೂ ಇವೆ. ‘ಏನಾದರೂ ಆಗು ಮೊದಲು ಮಾನವನಾಗು' ಎನ್ನುವ ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಆಶಯ ಈ ಹೊತ್ತಿನ ಅಗತ್ಯ, ನಿಜ. ಆದರೆ, ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಮಾರ್ಗ ಸವಕಲಾದುದು. ನಾಯಕರು ವಿಧಾನಮಂಡಲವನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ವಶಕ್ಕೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಭಾಷಣ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪ್ರಜಾಸತ್ತಾತ್ಮಕವಲ್ಲದ ಇಂಥ ಮಾರ್ಗಗಳನ್ನು ಸೂಚಿಸುವುದು ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ದಾರಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ‘ಚೌಕ'ಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರುವ ಸೃಜನಶೀಲತೆಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ.

ನಾಲ್ಕು ಚೂರು ರಂಜನೆ ಜೋರು - ವಿಜಯವಾಣಿ

ಒಂದು ಟಿಕೆಟ್ ಕೊಂಡು ಚಿತ್ರಮಂದಿರದ ಒಳಗೆ ಕಾಲಿಡುವ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕನಿಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಭಿನ್ನ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುವುದು ‘ಚೌಕ' ಚಿತ್ರದ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ. 1986ರ ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಗೋಪಾಲ (ಪ್ರೇಮ್ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನವನು. 1995ರ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಕೃಷ್ಣ (ದಿಗಂತ್) ಮೈಸೂರಿನವನು. 2000ನೇ ಇಸವಿಯ ಅನ್ವರ್ (ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲ್) ವಿಜಯಪುರದವನು ಮತ್ತು 2007ರ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನವನು. ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕೂ ಜನರ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಮಧ್ಯಂತರದ ವೇಳೆಗೆ (2017) ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ. ತಾವು ಮಾಡದಿರುವ ತಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಪ್ರಸಂಗ ಎದುರಾದಾಗ ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಂಕಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಲುಕುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದರಿಂದ ಹೊರಬರಲು ಅವರು ಮಾಡುವ ಸಾಹಸವೇ ಇಡೀ ಚಿತ್ರದ ಹೈಲೈಟ್. ಗೊಂದಲಕ್ಕೆ ಅವಕಾಶ ನೀಡದಂತೆ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಗಾರಿಕೆ. ನಾಲ್ವರು ನಾಯಕಿಯರೂ (ದೀಪಾ, ಐಂದ್ರಿತಾ, ಭಾವನಾ, ಪ್ರಿಯಾಮಣಿ) ಮೊದಲರ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಸೀಮಿತ. ಅಭಿನಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೇಮ್ ಪ್ರಜ್ವಲ್ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಾರ್ಕ್ಸ್ ಗಿಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೊನೆಯವರೆಗೂ ಕುತೂಹಲವನ್ನು ಕಾಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡು, ಕಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಸಂದೇಶ ಸಾರುವ ಈ ಚಿತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ‘ವಿಜಯವಾಣಿ' ಓದುಗ ವಿಮರ್ಶಕರು ನೀಡಿರುವ ಸರಾಸರಿ ಅಂಕ 10ಕ್ಕೆ 8. ಸ್ಟಾರ್ ****

ಒಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಕೌತುಕ, ಮತ್ತೊಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಭಾವುಕ- ವಿಜಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ

ಈ ಚೌಕ ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞರ, ಕಲಾವಿದರ, ಸಂಗೀತ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರು, ಐವರು ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಾಹಕರು, ಐವರು ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಕಾರರು, ನಾಲ್ವರು ಹೀರೋಗಳು, ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯ ಹಿರೋಯಿನ್‌ಗಳು, ಮತ್ತೊಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಪೋಷಕ ಕಲಾವಿದರು... ಹೇಳಿದಷ್ಟೂ ಅದು ಹನುಮಂತನ ಬಾಲವೇ. ಹೀಗಾಗಿ ಇವರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯೇ ಇಂಡಿಯನ್‌ ಆರ್ಮಿ ತುಕಡಿಯಂತಿದೆ. ಇಂಥದೊಂದು ಸೈನ್ಯ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡು, ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿರಪರಾಧಿಗಳ ನಡುವಿನ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊರಟಂಥ ಜೋಷ್‌ ತೋರಿದ್ದಾರೆ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ. ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಮಾನವೀಯತೆ ಮುಖ್ಯವೇ ವಿನಃ, ಜಾತಿ, ಧರ್ಮಗಳಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದು ಇಡೀ ಸಿನಿಮಾದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಿಡಿಯುವ ನಾಡಿ. ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗೆ ಕುಳಿತ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಕಾಗುಣಿತ ಲೋಪ- ದೋಷಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ಫರ್ಸ್ಟ್‌ ಕ್ಲಾಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಸ್‌ ಆಗುವಂತೆ, ಅಲ್ಲೊಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಇಲ್ಲೊಂದಿಷ್ಟು ಮುರುಕು ಮುಕ್ಕುಗಳ ನಡುವೆಯೂ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಣಿಯುವ ಹುಡುಗಿಯರು, ಎದುರಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಹಣಿಯುವ ಹುಡುಗರು, ಕಮರ್ಷಿಯಲ್‌ ಅಂಶಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಸಾಲೆ ಬೆರೆಸಿದ್ದರೆ, ಪಾರಿವಾಳ ಹಾರಾಟದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ರೋಚಕವಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ಪಡ್ಡೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಜೈಲು ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಹಾಡುತ್ತ, ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕುತ್ತ ಬದುಕಿನ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಾಡಿಸಿವೆ. ಒಂದೇ ಹಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜೋಡಿಗಳ ಡ್ಯುಯೆಟ್‌ ಸಾಂಗ್‌ ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದ್ದು, ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾ ವರ್ಕ್‌ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಥ್‌ ನೀಡಿದೆ. ಸುವರ್ಣ ಸೌಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೈಲಿನಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ ಯುವಕರು ತೀಕ್ಷ್ಣ ಮಾತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಕಾರಣಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕುಕ್ಕುತ್ತಾರೆ, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಜಾಲತಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿ ಹೋಗುವ ಯುವಕರನ್ನು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಅದೊಂದು ಭಾವೈಕ್ಯದ ಸಂದೇಶ ನೀಡುವ ಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಭಾವುಕತೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

Chowka Movie Review- The Times of India

Dwarakish Chitra's 50th film, Tharun Sudhir's debut as a director and a star cast that will have most directors give more than just an arm to own -- there were expectations galore from Chowka. And this film proves to be worth all that hype. The film, albeit being three hours long, manages to keep one engaged throughout the narrative and also provides old-fashioned entertainment with a positive message to the youth in the end. In a way, the team has given Sandalwood its own Rang De Basanti.One of the film's biggest strengths is the screenplay. A story that uses a hyperlink to connect multiple narratives can get tricky to handle. But Tharun proves to be a good storyteller and he has a good team in both his technicians and cast. The fact that the producers haven't cut back on the film's making adds to its charm and appeal. For choosing a cast that has so many powerhouse performers, Tharun doesn't cut corners of characters and play favourites. In fact, each character, big or small, contributes to the overall narrative.

For a film that is three hours long, one does not get tired with narrative's pace and stays with the story till the end. Watch this film if you like multi-starrers that provide commercial entertainment, while not bowing down to being just mindless fun.

Many stories, one impressive message- Indian Express

A heavy duty film, Tarun shows promise and his eye for detail is evident with Chowka. There are a lot of stories but none get entangled. Of course, the film is stretched, but the director manages to maintain the grip all throughout. All the actors have gone by the content of the film and although they are established actors in their own right, none have shown a hint of wanting to overshadow the other. Even Challenging star Darshan's cameo is justified as he faces off with Baahubali Kalakeya. Senior actor Kashinath and Manvitha's roles are a surprise. The heroines - Aindrita Ray, Priyamani, Bhavana and Deepa Sanidhi - share less screen space, but add to the charm of the film. Technically all of them have contributed to the film. Credit should go to the music directors for the beautiful songs. Espeically the track, Appa I love You, which certainly makes tears rolling down. Watch Chowka for its pragmatic message to all of us.
